What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha (AKA skin scraping) is an ancient technique used in Chinese medicine. A flat stone applies pressure and scrapes the skin, treating muscle pain and tightness. This action often resulted in bruising and redness (the “sha” in the name refers to skin redness) and was highly regarded as an effective treatment.
It’s still used today, though now more commonly as a form of self-care - which is why we have seen it take the beauty world by storm.
What are the benefits of Gua Sha?
- Self-care
Gua Sha is the ultimate self-care treatment for the face. Why? Because our facial muscles are constantly working. Whether it’s to raise our eyebrows, clench our jaws, or even just to frown, these muscles are continuously overloaded with stress from continuous expression. Gua Sha helps to release this tension and promote lymphatic drainage.
- Enhanced features
Gua Sha is believed to sculpt and enhance features in a remarkable way. How? Every scrape leads to lymphatic drainage, which soothes bloat and reduces the fluids that build up under the skin, ultimately helping to sharpen every contour of your face. I know. Crazy, right? Who would’ve thought gliding a stone over your face could make your cheekbones chiseled!
How do I use a Gua Sha tool?
- Prep your skin
Always start by applying a serum. This will help the tool glide gracefully.
- Be gentle
Once you’ve prepped your skin, gently massage your face and neck in an upward and outward motion. Start from your neck, then move to your chin, cheeks, and around the eye area (be extra gentle in that area).
- Repeat
Repeat each motion three times for 5-10 minutes daily.
